I have read the story of the Tower of Babel on many occasions. I was never completley sure of what the sin was that God was displeased with In the Gen 11 text. On this morning, I heard a minister present a discourse on the topic, and what he said made really good sence and is congruent with the theme of the Scriptures.
Since the fall of Satan, God has had a master plan to regain complete control and place all authority again under His feet. In just a few days, everything will be God again, and the sting of death will be gone.
Until that time, God does not have interest in His children becoming complacent or comfortable. We are to be pilgrims here on earth, this world is not our home.
In Gen 11, the people of God all spoke one langauage. They decided that they no longer wanted to be scattered over the face of the earth; they had tired of sojourning. The Scriptures say they "settled" v. Herein was God displeased and he anuciated a plan to continue to separate, scatter, and confuse mankind.
This mankind would continue to sojourn in, not a city, but a strange land. All who have sought comfort have found themselves in sin and the love of the world through lust and discontentment.
God's chosen are called to hope, to be pressing toward a mark. While on earth we are to be careful about becoming comfortable until the final establishment of God's New Heaven and New Earth.
